After turning 50, Steve Johnson decided to embark on an incredible, life-changing adventure. Leaving family and friends behind, he chose to thru-hike the rugged 2189.1-mile Appalachian Trail. In this first of two volumes, Steve, "Sir Fob W. Pot," invites readers to lace up their hiking boots and join him on the journey of a lifetime, from Georgia to Maine, traveling five million steps across fourteen states. Filled with belly-aching laughs, heart-wrenching struggles, practical life lessons, and AT hiking strategies, Fob's hike is a compelling story about humanity and wilderness survival.
Sir Fob W Pot Journey to Katahdin Volume 1 Steve Johnson 9780692838334 Books
You might assume from the title that this is just another aspiring hiker’s story of walking the 2100+ miles of the Appalachian Trail. You would be wrong. Steve “Fob” Johnson is a masterful and entertaining storyteller, keeping your attention and giving you a taste of the highs and lows of the southern half of his six-month hike. He is not too proud to tell of his miscalculations and failures, which are numerous. But he always keeps the goal in mind: reaching Mount Katahdin in Maine. This is not a book about an individual on a journey to “find himself.” Rather, Steve is a retired Air Force colonel who is disciplined, spiritual, confident, happily married, and possesses a strong moral compass. He thoughtfully explains his ten reasons for undertaking such a challenge. His military background, working with hundreds of individuals in a myriad of places, gives him a gift at analyzing and explaining the people he meets along the trail. And he does!
If you simply want a book about the Trail, the places, the route, the animals, the heat and cold, the equipment, well, you will get all that – and a lot more. The Fob takes the lessons he learns or truths he sees on his journey and lists them as “Fob Fundamentals,” short observations on life that are pithy, wise, and worth remembering.
Did I mention that Steve Johnson has a knack for making you laugh? “Tears in your eyes” kind of laughter. I read most of the book to my wife at supper over a number of evenings. We discovered another “Fob Fundamental” to add to his list: Never read a Steve Johnson book while eating, as you risk joking to death while laughing!
Read this book. When you are finished, you can join me in urging The Fob to finish Volume 2.

Sir Fob W Pot Journey to Katahdin Volume 1 Steve Johnson 9780692838334 Books Reviews
I loved this book! I seriously want to hike the AP now after the mental images this book created. The book is a log of the author's trip, his daily challenges and successes, yet so much more! I enjoyed the relationships, the applicable life lessons along the way and the humor that kept me chuckling along the way. This is not the type of book i would typically pick up but i thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sir Fob's writing of his journey on the AT is so enjoyable i couldn't put it down. At times it was so funny i was laughing out loud! As an AT section hiker it was the inspirational part of the book that drew me in. This single foot path that travels through nature is the perfect place for contemplation. Read this story and then go on a hike, the mountains are calling.
I bought this book to support a guy I went college with but didn't personally know. However, I was pleasantly surprised how good the book was! I've already purchased the second one to contribute adventure! I've been both entertained and encouraged. Thanks, Steve, for writing these books to provide interesting information, laughs, and to glorify your creator!
Steve Johnson captures the very spirit of the Appalachian Trail in his book which recounts his personal journey on the AT. His engaging, humorous, enlightening writing style is unique among AT authors. Through his entertaining storytelling style, he introduces readers not only to the geography and logistics of undertaking a long distance hike but also to the unique characteristics of the oldest of long distance trails in America. He captures the essence of the people who choose to make this sojourn, as well as those who support hikers along the way. He incorporates insightful lessons which cause the reader to dig deeper into understanding how challenging oneself can result in amazing personal growth. This excellent read will leave the reader with a desire to go out and explore the backcountry and learn his own lessons on the value of sacrificing comfort for adventure.
A great blend of humor, adventure, and spiritual learning. I really appreciate how Sir Fob makes the connections between life and adventures on the trail and our walk with God. The humor left me laughing out loud several times and then I would have to relay the story to my wife. It has got me thinking about the outdoors, physical trials, how much God loves us, and what am I going to do when I turn 50? Thank you for the entertaining and uplifting tale of your journey!
I have read several books about Appalachian Trail journeys, but, as a Christian this one is by far, my favorite. While some of the author's tales can be a bit bawdy, they are nevertheless, very entertaining. Several times I had to pause my reading to clear the river of tears bursting from my eyes because I was laughing so hard! His pearls of wisdom were insightful and tying them in with a bible study at the end was a nice touch. Even if the reader isn't interested in the faith-based portion of the book, it's still a worthwhile read for the humor and insights for living. It's also very worthwhile for anyone interested in hiking the A.T. I can't wait for "the rest of the story!"
Steve Johnson, A.K.A. Fob, accomplished an amazing feat by thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail last year. I followed Fob's trail blog throughout his journey and enjoyed every entry he made during this incredible experience. When I learned that he was planning to write a book about his experience along the trail, I had to purchase it. I was not disappointed. Fob is a great story-teller. I realize that I will never be able to physically complete this journey, but through Fob's writing, I was able to get an idea of the physical, mental and spiritual challenges of the trail.
Volume 1 includes Fob's 29 "Fob Fundamentals"; things Fob observed along the trail, his lessons learned or concepts we should ponder. If you apply any of the "Fob Fundamentals" in your personal life, you'll be a better person.
From a Christian perspective, this is a "must read".
